Description
The Far East of Peat is the flagship peated release from Saburomaru distillery, operated by Wakatsuru Shuzo in Toyama prefecture. Wakatsuru has been making whisky since 1952 and revived Saburomaru in 2017, building its identity around a cast metal ZEMON pot still and the distillery's old-school heavily peated house style. This NAS blended malt was selected for the French market and bottled at cask strength.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the wood lends a familiar vanilla and light caramel backbone that sits beneath the distillery's characteristically assertive peat. Smoke and dried citrus are the signature notes, with the Ex-Bourbon oak softening the edges at full strength. The Far East of Peat name signals exactly what Saburomaru is about: peat-forward character drawn from one of Japan's more idiosyncratic distilling traditions.
