Description
Von Winning is one of the leading estates of the Palatinate, in western Germany, and Pechstein is among its most celebrated single vineyards, classified as a Grosses Gewaechs within the VDP quality system. The name points to the site itself: a soil rich in dark basalt and volcanic stone that holds warmth and drives a smoky, flinty character into the wine. The Palatinate sits in the rain shadow of the Haardt hills, giving a dry, sunny climate that ripens Riesling fully while the cool nights preserve its natural acidity. The wine is fermented dry and then aged for 24 months on its fine lees, a long contact that builds texture and a subtle savoury depth around the fruit. Expect a pale gold colour and a nose of ripe lemon, white peach and struck flint. The palate is dry and firm, with citrus peel, green apple and a saline, mineral finish that runs long. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass.
