Named after a 15th century lime kiln, the Kalkofen vineyard gives its limestone soil to this dry Von Winning Riesling from the Palatinate. Aged on its lees, it is taut and mineral, with lemon, green apple and white flowers over a chalky, saline finish.

Description
Kalkofen is one of the most renowned vineyards of the Palatinate, and its name records a lime kiln that stood here from the 15th century. That history is written into the soil, which is unusually rich in limestone, the rock once quarried on site to make bricks. Limestone drains well and reflects light, and it lends this dry Riesling from Von Winning a chalky tension and a bright, saline line of acidity. The region enjoys warm, dry summers sheltered by the Haardt hills, while cool nights hold back the sugars and keep the fruit precise. Classified as a Grosses Gewaechs, the wine is fermented dry and rested on its lees, which softens the edges and adds a fine savoury weight. The colour is pale with green tints, and the nose leads with lemon, green apple, pear and white flowers. On the palate it is dry, taut and mineral, with citrus and a stony, salty finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass.
