Dani Landi and Curro Bareño make Canto Platero in DO Méntrida, between the Sierra de Gredos and Toledo. Grown on sandy granite soils and raised in concrete, this Garnacha is fragrant and fine, with red berries, dried rose and wild herbs.
Description
Canto Platero comes from Vitícola Mentridana, the Méntrida project of Dani Landi and Curro Bareño, two of the names behind the revival of Garnacha in the Gredos foothills west of Toledo. The fruit grows on sandy, granitic soils, which drain freely and give wines of finesse rather than power, the granite lending a fragrant, mineral character that defines the modern Gredos style. The site is a north-facing plot at altitude, so the vines see cooler conditions and a long, slow ripening that holds acidity and keeps alcohol in check despite the warm region. The wine is raised in concrete rather than oak, a neutral vessel that preserves the pure fruit and floral aromatics while allowing a gentle micro-oxygenation that softens the texture without adding wood flavour. It is pale, bright red in the glass. The nose is delicate and perfumed, with dried rose petals, red berries, wild herbs and a peppery lift; the palate is light to medium, fresh and finely textured, with crunchy red fruit, a savoury herbal edge and silky tannins. Farming here is sustainable. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled, with poultry, game or grilled vegetables.
