Salvador Batlle’s Conexió Cósmica makes this natural red in Agullana, in L’Empordà, Catalonia, near the French border. A young, low-intervention field blend of Cariñena, Garnacha Gris and Monastrell, it is bright and juicy with red berries and a fresh, savoury edge.
Description
Conexió Cósmica is the project of new-generation winemaker Salvador Batlle in Agullana, in L'Empordà in northern Catalonia, close to the border with France. This bag-in-box red is made for everyday drinking but follows the same low-intervention approach as the rest of the cellar, with minimal handling and nothing added. It blends Cariñena and white Cariñena with Garnacha Gris and Monastrell, an old-vine field mix grown on the granite and schist soils typical of the region, where the dry climate and the Tramuntana wind keep the vineyards healthy and the grapes concentrated. Vinified young and unoaked, it is a natural wine in the literal sense, fermented with native yeasts and bottled, or boxed, fresh to keep the primary fruit and a touch of the savoury, mineral character of the land. It pours a bright, light red. The nose shows red berries, cherry and plum with an earthy, herbal note. The palate is light and juicy, with fresh red fruit, gentle tannins and a clean, slightly grippy finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees, lightly chilled. It suits everyday food: charcuterie, roast pork, poultry and tomato-based dishes. The three-litre box keeps well once opened.
