Anna Martens and Eric Narioo farm biodynamically high on the north face of Mount Etna. This field blend of Carricante, Catarratto and local whites ages on its lees, a light, mineral skin-contact white with lemon, green apple and volcanic salinity.
Description
Vino di Anna is the work of Anna Martens and Eric Narioo, whose six hectares sit high on the north face of Mount Etna in Sicily, farmed biodynamically. Palmento Bianco is a field blend of Carricante, Catarratto, Grecanico, Minella and other native white varieties grown on volcanic soils of black sand and broken lava, which drain sharply and, with the altitude and cool mountain nights, lock in acidity and a saline mineral edge. The wine takes its name from the palmento, the old stone vat once used across Etna for treading and fermenting, and is made with light skin contact and ageing on its lees. That lees ageing, where the wine rests on spent yeast cells, adds gentle texture and a savoury depth, while the short skin contact gives a faint amber tone and light grip rather than firm tannin. At 11.5 percent alcohol it stays light and energetic. The colour is pale gold. The nose shows lemon, green apple, white peach and dried herbs over a smoky, earthy minerality. The palate is dry, fresh and saline, with a long volcanic finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits white fish, shellfish and roast chicken.
