Vino di Anna grows this Nerello Mascalese on the north face of Etna in Sicily, from old vines up to 1,200 metres on volcanic soil. Made naturally, it is pale and fragrant, with red cherry, wild herbs and a stony, mineral edge.
Description
Vino di Anna is a small family winery on the northern slopes of Etna in Sicily, farming old vines between 760 and 1,200 metres above sea level. The plots are worked biodynamically and organically, and the wine is made with minimal intervention. Jeudi 15 Rosso is built mainly on Nerello Mascalese with a little Nerello Cappuccio and Alicante. The high altitude and the wide day to night temperature swing slow ripening and hold natural acidity, while the volcanic ash and broken lava soils give the wine its lift and stony minerality. Vine age between sixty and a hundred years keeps yields low and concentration in the fruit. There is no marked oak influence, so the focus stays on fruit, herb and mineral. The colour is pale ruby. The nose is fragrant, with red cherry, wild strawberry and Mediterranean herbs over a smoky, ashy note. The palate is light to medium bodied, the tannins fine and slightly dusty, the acidity bright and the finish saline and savoury. Serve at around 15 degrees, lightly cooled. It pairs with roast pork, poultry, mushroom dishes and grilled oily fish such as tuna.
