Finca Museum makes this Cigales rosé from Tempranillo grown on poor mineral soils with very low yields. Sourced partly from century old vines, it is fresh and dry, with wild strawberry, redcurrant and a saline edge from the Castilian plateau.
Description
Vinea Rosado comes from Finca Museum in Cigales, the rosé heartland of Castilla y León, an estate built when Grupo Barón de Ley expanded beyond Rioja. The winery works 185 hectares of its own land plus 60 controlled hectares, much of it planted to century old Tempranillo. The continental plateau here sits high and dry, with poor stony soils that hold little water and force low yields, concentrating colour and flavour while the wide swing between hot days and cold nights preserves acidity. Cigales has a long tradition of pale clarete and rosado, and this wine follows it, pressed gently and fermented cool in stainless steel to keep the fruit fresh and the structure dry rather than sweet. The colour is bright pink with a coppery cast. The nose shows wild strawberry, cherry and redcurrant lifted by orange peel and a faint floral note, while the palate is dry and savoury with a mineral, slightly saline finish that reflects the limestone rich subsoils. Serve well chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It works as an aperitif and alongside grilled pork, roast chicken or a plate of prawns.
