Vinas Mora makes this red from Babić, an indigenous grape of Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, near Primošten. Grown on stony coastal vineyards and made naturally, it is savoury and structured, with dark cherry, dried herbs and a saline, sea-air edge.
Description
Vinas Mora works in Dalmatia on the Croatian coast, near the village of Primošten, with Babić, a local red grape long grown on the region's stony, sun-baked terraces. The vineyards sit on rocky, limestone-rich coastal soils that store little water, forcing the vines to root deep and concentrate their fruit, while the maritime setting brings sea breezes and a saline freshness that runs through the wine. Babić gives medium-bodied, structured reds with firm acidity and a savoury, herbal character that reflects the wild scrub of the hillsides. This bottling is made naturally, with organic fruit and minimal cellar intervention, so the wine keeps the bright acidity and earthy, unpolished character of the place. It pours a deep red. The nose is savoury and dark-fruited, with cherry and red berries over dried Mediterranean herbs, brine and a peppery, stony note; the palate is firm and fresh, with grippy tannins, a salty mineral lift and a long, herbal finish. Serve at 16 degrees, with grilled lamb, beef or rich coastal fish dishes.
