Vinas Mora is the project of former sommelier Kreso Petrekovic, working bush-trained Babić vines on the dry stone terraces of Primošten on the Croatian coast. This barrel-aged, naturally made red is dark and structured, with plum, cherry and a saline, peppery edge.
Description
Vinas Mora is a coastal Dalmatian estate at Primošten, where Kreso Petrekovic returned from sommelier work in New York to revive bush-trained Babić vines on rugged terraces ringed by dry stone walls. Babić is a thick-skinned native grape suited to the heat and wind here. The vineyards sit on poor, stony, limestone-rich ground close to the Adriatic, where strong sun ripens the fruit fully while sea breezes and cool nights preserve acidity and bring a saline character to the wine. The grapes are farmed organically and the wine is made with minimal intervention. Ageing in wood rounds the firm tannins of Babić and adds a savoury, spiced layer without masking the fruit. The wine is deep and dark, with aromas of plum, black cherry and dried herbs over tobacco, earth and a briny, mineral note. The palate is full and structured, with grippy tannins, dark fruit and a savoury, salt-tinged finish that reflects its maritime origin. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees, decanted if young. It is built for grilled and roasted red meat.
