From Primosten on the Dalmatian coast, Vinas Mora grows Babic and Plavac Mali on limestone metres from the sea. Natural and organic, Andreis is a fresh, saline red of wild red berries, herbs and a coastal salinity.
Description
Andreis comes from Vinas Mora, on the Croatian coast at Primosten, where the vines grow on limestone rock close to the sea. The estate works the goblet trained Babic, the local Dalmatian grape, with Plavac Mali in support. The site is rugged: thin soils over white limestone, constant sun and a salt laden sea breeze. The poor stony ground keeps yields low and concentrates flavour, while the limestone and the maritime air give the wine its saline, savoury character. The wine is made by natural and organic methods, with low intervention in the cellar and no additions to mask the site. At 12.5 per cent it stays light and fresh rather than heavy. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows wild red berries, sour cherry, dried Mediterranean herbs, a stony earthiness and a clear note of sea salt. The palate is light to medium bodied, with crisp acidity, gentle tannin and a savoury, briny finish. This is a coastal red built for the table and can take a light chill. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits grilled fish, cured pork and herby salads.
