Viñas del Vero makes this young Tinto Roble in D.O. Somontano from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown across estate vineyards. After blending, it rests four months in American and French oak, giving soft, fruity red and dark berries with light spice.
Description
Viñas del Vero works in D.O. Somontano, in Aragón, where the foothills of the Pyrenees temper the climate and give a longer, cooler growing season than most of inland Spain. This young red blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot drawn from different estate vineyards. Cabernet brings structure, blackcurrant and freshness, while Merlot fills the middle with soft, plummy fruit, a pairing well suited to the cooler conditions here. Once the coupage is assembled, the wine rests for four months in American and French oak. That short spell in barrel is enough to round the tannins and add a light vanilla and spice frame without burying the bright primary fruit, keeping the wine fresh and easy to drink young. The colour is bright ruby. The nose leads with ripe plum, cherry and red berries, with a gentle vanilla and a touch of pepper. The palate is medium bodied, supple and fruit-forward, with soft tannins and a clean finish. Serve at 16 degrees. A straightforward, food-friendly red, it suits grilled pork, roast chicken and pasta.
