Viñas del Vero makes this Somontano rosé from Pinot Noir grown on north-east-facing vineyards high in the Pyrenean foothills. It is pale and fresh, showing red cherry, redcurrant and a floral, delicate character built for early drinking.
Description
Viñas del Vero takes its name from the river that runs down from the Pyrenees through D.O. Somontano in north-eastern Spain. Founded in 1986 and part of González Byass since 2008, it farms extensive vineyards in the area. This rosé is a varietal Pinot Noir from north-east-facing plots at around 770 metres, high enough that cool nights and a wide diurnal range slow ripening and keep the natural acidity high. The altitude and aspect suit Pinot Noir, a thin-skinned variety that gives delicate, perfumed rosé. The grapes are pressed gently and the juice fermented at low temperature in stainless steel, which preserves the bright red fruit and floral aromatics and keeps the colour pale. There is no oak. The colour is a light, clear pink. The nose shows red cherry and redcurrant with a floral, rose-petal lift typical of the grape. The palate is fresh and dry, the red fruit carried by crisp, citrus-edged acidity that gives the wine its lively, clean character. The finish is clean and refreshing. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits roast chicken, white fish and lighter seafood.
