Viñas del Vero makes this Somontano red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other red grapes grown under the cold winters and short summers of the Aragonese foothills. Eighteen months in French Allier oak give blackcurrant, plum, cedar and a firm tannic frame.
Description
Viñas del Vero Gran Vos is a Bordeaux-styled red from D.O. Somontano in Aragón, made by the winery founded in 1986 around 550 hectares near Barbastro. It is built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with other red varieties from a selection of the best parcels. The climate here drives the wine: extreme winters and short summers with an average annual temperature near 12 degrees and around 600 millimetres of rain give a long, cool growing season that ripens the Cabernet slowly and keeps the wine fresh and structured. The wine ages 18 months in French Allier oak, a tight-grained wood that meters oxygen gently and lends cedar, fine spice and a measured grip rather than overt sweetness, while the barrel maturation knits the tannins together. It is deep cherry red with a youthful rim. The nose shows blackcurrant, plum and red currant with cedar, vanilla, tobacco and a cool eucalyptus lift typical of mountain Cabernet. The palate is full and firmly structured, with ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a long finish. Serve at 17 degrees, decanted, with grilled red meat or hard cheese.
