Description
Viñas del Vero is one of the leading producers in D.O. Somontano, founded in 1989 in Barbastro and named for the Vero river that runs beside it. Somontano lies in the Pyrenean foothills of Aragón, where altitude and cool mountain nights temper the summer heat, so Chardonnay ripens to generous fruit while keeping enough acidity to stay fresh. This is the unoaked style, made to show the grape and the place directly. The hand of the winery is light: the fruit is fermented cool in stainless steel to capture the tropical aromatics and hold the wine primary and bright, with no barrel and no malolactic softening to blur the fruit. The wine is pale gold with green glints. The nose is clean and expressive, with ripe pineapple, mango and banana mingling with lemon zest and a floral top note. The palate is flavourful and rounded, the ripe stone and tropical fruit filling the middle while the citrus acidity keeps the finish clean. This is an approachable, fruit driven Chardonnay to drink young. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
