The Sanz brothers of Viña Zorzal joined Priorat-based winemaker Fredi Torres to reinterpret Navarrese Garnacha. Tifero co-ferments red Garnacha with a little Garnacha Blanca, aged nine months in barrel, giving a fluid, youthful red of fresh cherry, raspberry and citrus lift.
Description
Viña Zorzal Tifero is a Navarra red made by the Sanz brothers of Viña Zorzal with Fredi Torres, the Priorat and Empordà based winemaker known for a fresh, minimal-intervention style. The wine is built on Garnacha Tinta with a portion of Garnacha Blanca, the white grape co-fermented in to add aromatic lift and a lighter texture. Garnacha thrives in Navarra's warm, dry summers, while cooler nights and the influence of the surrounding hills preserve acidity and freshness, holding the alcohol to a modest 12.4 per cent. Including the white skins during fermentation brightens the aromatics and softens the structure, in keeping with the wine's fluid, drinkable intent. Ageing runs nine months in barrel, enough to round the tannins and add a light savoury frame without weighing down the fruit. The wine is bright ruby, with a nose of fresh cherry, raspberry and red currant lifted by citrus peel, rose and white flowers. The palate is light and fluid, with fine tannins, vivid red fruit and a fresh, clean finish. Serve lightly cool, around fourteen to sixteen degrees. It suits lighter meats, poultry and salads.
