Viña Zorzal Señora de las Alturas is a Garnacha-led red from the lower Ebro valley in Navarra, grown near Fitero where gentle terrain brings extra freshness. Time in barrels and clay jars gives ripe red and black fruit, fig leaf and spice.
Description
Viña Zorzal Señora de las Alturas is made by Bodegas Zorzal in Corella, Navarra, a winery founded in 1989 to revive the region's native varieties with the belief that good wine starts in the vineyard. The fruit comes from vineyards near Fitero in the lower Ebro valley, where the gentle terrain forms a cooler pocket among the surrounding vineyards and lends the wine extra freshness. It is led by Garnacha with a touch of Garnacha Blanca, grown on the area's stony soils under a climate that ripens the fruit while the site's freshness keeps acidity intact. The wine is aged fifteen months in a mix of oak barrels and clay jars, the latter allowing slow oxygen exchange without adding oak flavour, which preserves the fruit's purity while building texture. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose shows ripe red and black fruits, fig leaf and a gentle spice. The palate is medium bodied at 13.7%, fresh and supple with fine tannins, lively acidity and a savoury, herbal finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It works with roast lamb, pork and mushroom dishes.
