Viña Zorzal’s Señora de las Alturas is a Viura and Garnacha Blanca white from old vineyards in southwest Navarra, aged nine months in vats and barrels. It shows white peach and green apple with a mineral edge and a gently rounded texture.
Description
Señora de las Alturas Blanco comes from Proyecto Zorzal, the Sanz brothers' estate in southwest Navarra, where they have revived old vineyards and native varieties long left in the background. It blends Viura with Garnacha Blanca, a fuller-bodied white grape well suited to the region's warm, dry growing season and higher, cooler sites that protect freshness. The wine spends nine months in a combination of vats and barrels. Ageing on the lees in tank builds volume and a subtle creaminess, while time in older wood allows slow oxygen exchange for texture and length without heavy oak flavour. The mix of vessels keeps the fruit clear while adding weight to the mid palate. The colour is a bright pale yellow. The nose is fresh and singular for the vintage, with white peach and green apple, citrus peel and a mineral note. On the palate it is medium bodied and balanced, the stonefruit carried by firm acidity and a hint of vanilla from the barrel, finishing clean and mineral. It drinks well now but has the structure to hold. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees with white fish, roast chicken or pork, and autumn vegetables.
