Viña Zorzal’s first village wine comes from cool, high Garnacha plots around Lerga in Navarra, chosen for altitude and rainfall with climate change in mind. Eighteen months in barrel and cement give a fresh, mineral red of crisp red fruit and wildflowers.
Description
Golerga is the first village wine from Proyecto Zorzal, made by the Sanz family in D.O. Navarra with vintner Gonzalo Ibarrola Intxusta around the village of Lerga. It is a single-variety Garnacha, drawn from plots chosen for their latitude, altitude and rainfall, a deliberate response to a warming climate and a search for freshness in a grape that ripens easily. Navarra is one of the historic homes of Garnacha, and these higher, cooler sites hold onto acidity and aromatic lift. The wide diurnal swing between warm days and cold nights preserves the crisp red fruit and floral character. The wine ages 18 months split between barrels and cement tanks. The cement keeps the fruit fresh and direct, while the time in wood softens the structure through slow oxygen exchange without adding obvious oak. The colour is bright, medium ruby. The nose shows crisp red fruit, wildflowers and a clear mineral note. The palate is light and fresh, with fine tannin, vibrant acidity and an earthy, stony finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly cool. It suits roast poultry, pork and game birds.
