Viña Zorzal makes this Navarra rosado from Garnacha vines over 30 years old in the Ombatillo area of Corella. Drawn off by the saignée method, it is pale pink and dry, with fresh strawberry, ripe peach and a crisp citrus finish.
Description
Bodegas Zorzal works out of Corella in the south of Navarra, founded in 1989 to revive the region's indigenous grapes on the principle that the wine is made in the vineyard. This rosado comes from Garnacha vines more than 30 years old in the Ombatillo area, where older plantings give lower yields and more concentrated fruit. The wine is made by the saignée method: the grapes go into stainless steel tanks with their skins and macerate for a few hours, after which a portion of lightly coloured must is run off and fermented cool to keep the aromatics fresh. Garnacha is well suited to rosado, giving bright red fruit and a generous mid palate while holding a pale colour from the short maceration. The wine is pale pink, with aromas of freshly picked strawberry and ripe peach lifted by a floral hint. The palate is dry and juicy, with cherry and redcurrant fruit, a citrus seam of acidity and a clean, faintly saline close. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a versatile table wine for shellfish, grilled white fish, roast chicken and summer salads.
