Description
Viña Zorzal is the venture of the Sanz brothers in Navarra, northern Spain, and Bidai Berri was made with the cooperative of the village of Eslava, around 72 kilometres from the home winery. The wine is a single-variety Garnacha grown organically. Navarra's continental climate, with hot days, cool nights and a wide diurnal range, holds acidity and perfume in Garnacha while ripening the fruit fully, and the wine is built around balance rather than weight. After fermentation it spends ten months in barrel, where gentle oxygen contact through the wood rounds the tannins and adds a light spice while keeping the bright fruit in front. The colour is bright medium-intensity ruby. The nose shows ripe strawberry, red cherry and plum over black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of earth. The palate is medium bodied and supple, with soft fine tannins, fresh acidity and a clean, spiced finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It is an easy match for roast and grilled meats and earthy vegetable dishes.
