Viña Vilano Roble comes from a Pedrosa de Duero cooperative working century-old Tinta Fina in Ribera del Duero. A short three months in American oak keeps it young and fruit-forward, with ripe strawberry, plum and a sweet, spicy lift at 15 per cent.
Description
Viña Vilano Roble is made by the Viña Vilano cooperative in Pedrosa de Duero, in Ribera del Duero. The society farms more than 300 hectares of Tinta Fina, the local Tempranillo, many of the vines over a hundred years old, which crop little and bring concentration and ripe fruit. The high continental plateau of Burgos gives hot days and cold nights, a wide diurnal range that ripens the grape fully, here to 15 per cent, while preserving colour and a measure of freshness. This is the young roble tier, made for early drinking. It spends three months in American oak barrels followed by three months in bottle. The brief oak ageing and the slow oxygen exchange round off the edges and add vanilla, coconut and sweet spice without building heavy tannin, keeping the wine fruit-forward and approachable. It pours deep, bright ruby. The nose is ripe strawberry and red fruit with plum, sweet spice and vanilla. The palate is full and generous, with ripe fruit, soft tannin and a warm, spicy finish. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees. It is an easy partner for grilled and roast meats.
