Viña Vilano makes this Ribera del Duero Reserva from old vine Tempranillo grown around Pedrosa de Duero. Twenty months in oak frame deep black fruit, sweet spice and the firm structure of the appellation.
Description
Viña Vilano is a cooperative founded in 1975 at Pedrosa de Duero in Burgos, in the heart of D.O. Ribera del Duero. It farms more than 300 hectares of Tinta Fina, the local name for Tempranillo, many of the vineyards over a hundred years old. Ribera del Duero sits on a high plateau where the altitude brings cold nights and a wide diurnal range, the cool nights locking in colour and acidity while the warm days ripen the fruit, giving the appellation's reds their deep colour and firm structure. The old, low yielding vines concentrate the fruit further. This Reserva ages for 20 months in oak barrels, a long maturation that softens the powerful tannins and adds spice and vanilla through slow oxygen exchange. It pours a deep, dark ruby and opens with ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, backed by tobacco, liquorice and the sweet spice of oak. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm tannins and a long, warming finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast and grilled red meats and aged cheese.
