Viña Somoza Vía XVIII is a Galician red named for the Roman road that crosses D.O. Valdeorras. Mencía, Garnacha and Albanello grow on a mix of soils and spend eleven months in barrel, giving red fruit, plum and an earthy, peppery character.
Description
Viña Somoza Vía XVIII takes its name from the ancient Roman road, the Via XVIII, that once linked Braga in Portugal with Astorga in León and still runs through D.O. Valdeorras lined with vines. Viñedos Somoza blends Mencía, Garnacha Tinta and Albanello grown across the patchwork of soils that defines this corner of Ourense, the variety of slate, granite and clay giving the wine its complexity. The Atlantic climate and the altitude bring cool nights that hold the acidity and keep the fruit fresh, while the vines root through quick-draining ground that concentrates flavour. The wine ages eleven months in barrel, enough to soften the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and add a light spice without masking the fruit. It pours a clean medium ruby. The nose offers red berries, cherry and plum over a stony, earthy base, with dried herbs and black pepper behind. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine tannins, a savoury mineral cut and a long herb-tinged finish. Serve at fifteen to sixteen degrees. Suits roast meats, game and mushroom dishes.
