Bodegas Bilbainas makes this pale Rioja rosado from Garnacha and Viura, the estate’s first wine of the kind. Vegan-friendly and bottled young, it shows strawberry, raspberry and violet over a spicy, floral lift and a crisp dry finish.
Description
Vina Pomal Rosado comes from Bodegas Bilbainas, a long-standing house in the Rioja Alta town of Haro, and is the winery's first rosado of this style. It blends Garnacha Tinta, which gives red fruit and body, with white Viura, which brings freshness and floral aromatics, both traditional Rioja varieties grown across the cool, Atlantic-influenced western part of the region. Rioja Alta sits at altitude on a mix of clay-limestone and alluvial soils, and the moderating influence of the Cantabrian mountains keeps the climate cooler and wetter than the rest of the Ebro valley. That cooler setting preserves natural acidity, which is what gives this rosado its tension and pale colour. The wine is made by gentle pressing and a short, cool fermentation to protect its delicate aromatics, then bottled young to keep its primary fruit intact. It is suitable for vegans. The colour is a pale, luminous pink. The nose shows strawberry and raspberry with violet and a spicy hint. The palate is light, dry and crisp, with citrus-peel freshness and a clean finish. Serve well chilled at 8C. It suits salads, white fish and fresh goats' cheese.
