Viña Pomal Ecológico 2022

Viña Pomal Ecológico is made by Bodegas Bilbaínas, a long-established Rioja producer based in the wine town of Haro in Rioja Alta. The wine comes from seventeen hectares certified as organic, and it is the only organic wine in the family range. It is built on Tempranillo, the backbone of Rioja, grown on the clay and limestone soils of the upper Ebro. These soils retain water through the dry summer and contribute to the variety's structure and ageing potential. The continental climate of Rioja Alta, with Atlantic influence from the west, gives a moderate growing season and the cool nights that preserve acidity and colour. The grapes are picked by hand. After fermentation the wine spends six months in American oak barrels, a shorter ageing that keeps the fruit fresh while the wood adds vanilla, coconut and a light spice. The colour is a deep ruby red with garnet at the rim. The nose shows ripe blackberry and red cherry, plum, vanilla and a savoury, herbal note. The palate is medium bodied and balanced, with soft tannin, a touch of leather and a clean, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb and grilled beef.
