Bodegas Bilbaínas makes this Rioja Crianza from Tempranillo grown on its Viña Paceta vineyard. Twelve months in American oak give vanilla and sweet spice over ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit, with the earthy structure typical of Rioja Alta.
Description
Viña Paceta comes from Bodegas Bilbaínas, a long established Haro house with extensive vineyard holdings in Rioja Alta, and takes its name from one of the estate's own plots. The grape is Tempranillo, suited to the clay and limestone soils and the cooler, Atlantic influenced climate of the upper Ebro, where a wide swing between day and night temperatures slows ripening and keeps acidity firm. The wine spends twelve months in American oak barrels, which contributes vanilla, coconut and sweet baking spice while gentle oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and stabilises the colour. This is the classic Crianza method that defines the region. The wine shows a bright violet to ruby colour. The nose leads with red fruits, strawberry and raspberry, lifted by oak derived vanilla and a savoury, leathery undertone that develops with bottle age. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a clear oak signature running into a clean finish. Serve at around 16 to 17 degrees in a standard red glass. It works well with roast lamb, grilled red meats and aged Manchego.
