Description
Viña Do Avó, the grandfather's vineyard, is made by Adega Antonio Cajide in Ribadavia in D.O. Ribeiro, a winery set up to offer an alternative to the large producers by recovering old vineyards and native grapes. This red blends the local Galician varieties Caíño Tinto, Sousón and Brancellao with Mencía and Garnacha. The young vines grow on a six-hectare site between 100 and 300 metres, in the cool, wet Atlantic climate of inland Galicia, which keeps alcohol low and acidity high and gives the wine its freshness and lift. This is an unoaked young red, so nothing stands between the drinker and the bright fruit and floral character of the native grapes. Expect a brilliant ruby colour with reddish glints and a perfumed nose of flowers and fresh red fruit such as strawberry and redcurrant. The palate is light and juicy at 12 per cent, with crisp acidity, fine tannin and a fresh, red-fruited finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, and a light chill suits it well in warm weather. Good with lighter dishes, poultry, fish and vegetables.
