Tomàs Cusiné makes Vilosell in Costers del Segre, a blend led by Tempranillo with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet and Garnacha. Grown on cool-influenced high ground and aged nine months in French oak, it shows ripe black fruit, spice and firm structure.
Description
Vilosell is a Costers del Segre red from Tomàs Cusiné, made in the village of El Vilosell in the Les Garrigues hills of inland Lleida. It blends roughly Tempranillo with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha from around 30 hectares of estate vineyard. The site sits on high ground with a mild continental climate, where a marked contrast between warm days and cool nights slows ripening and holds acidity and aromatic freshness in the fruit. The poor, stony soils restrict vigour and concentrate the grapes. Each variety plays its part, with Tempranillo for the backbone, Syrah for pepper and colour, Merlot for roundness, Cabernet for tannin and Garnacha for red fruit and warmth. The wine ages nine months in French oak, which firms the structure and adds spice and toast while leaving the fruit in front, with malolactic fermentation softening the acidity. It is deep ruby, showing aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and dark cherry over black pepper, vanilla and sweet spice. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm ripe tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead. It suits grilled and roast red meats.
