Description
Villscheider is a family estate in the mountains on the right bank of the Isarco river in northern Italy, where Florian, Erika and Meinrad have worked four hectares since 1997. This Kerner comes from the Valle Isarco, the coolest and highest zone of Alto Adige, a valley of steep terraces where whites keep exceptional freshness. Kerner is a crossing that includes Riesling in its parentage, and at altitude it holds firm acidity and clear aromatics while ripening reliably on the mountain slopes. The thin alpine soils and wide day-to-night temperature swing preserve the grape's citrus and stone fruit character and give the wine its nervy line. After fermentation it rests on its fine lees, which rounds the texture and adds a savoury depth to balance the acidity. Expect a pale colour with green tints, a nose of white peach, apricot and citrus peel with a herbal, sage-like edge, and a dry, crisp palate with a saline finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
