Vigneti Massa makes Derthona from Timorasso, the near-extinct Piedmont white that Walter Massa rescued. Grown in the Colli Tortonesi hills, it is structured and dry, with white peach, pear and a waxy, mineral depth.

Description
Vigneti Massa is the estate that saved Timorasso from extinction, when Walter Massa chose to revive this difficult native grape of the Colli Tortonesi in Piedmont rather than keep selling bulk red. Derthona is his benchmark white. The grape is prized for structure, texture and ageing potential, unusual qualities in a white, and the hillside vineyards of the Tortona hills, with their calcareous clay soils, give it a firm mineral spine. This is the young, unoaked expression, made to show fruit and site rather than wood. The colour is bright straw with golden tints. The nose shows white peach, pear and lemon over white flowers, with a waxy, beeswax character that is typical of the variety. The palate is full and structured for a white, dry and firm, carrying stone fruit, a saline mineral cut and a faint almond note into a long, savoury finish. This is a wine with the body to develop in bottle. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a wide glass.

Additional information
Its weight and structure suit richer seafood such as grilled white fish, prawns and scallops. It also stands up to roast chicken and roasted root vegetables, and the saline, waxy character makes it a good match for dishes with olive oil and herbs.
