Costa del Vento is Walter Massa’s single vineyard Timorasso from an exposed, windy hillside in the Tortona hills of Piedmont. Fuller and riper than his estate wine, it shows ripe stone fruit, lemon and a waxy, mineral depth, with real weight and grip.

Description
Costa del Vento is one of the top single vineyard Timorasso wines from Vigneti Massa, the Piedmont estate of Walter Massa. The name means coast of the wind, and the vineyard sits on a high, exposed slope in the Colli Tortonesi where constant breezes keep the fruit healthy and concentrate flavour. The soils are calcareous clay and marl, which give Timorasso its characteristic weight and firm mineral core, and the warm, breezy site pushes ripeness further than the estate bottling, reflected in the fuller body and higher alcohol. Timorasso is a demanding, low yielding grape, but from a site like this it produces a white of unusual power and depth. The wine is aged on its fine lees, which adds texture and a savoury complexity across the palate, with no reliance on new oak. It is deep straw gold, with ripe white peach, apricot, lemon and a waxy, honeyed note, over dried herbs and a saline mineral base. The palate is broad and structured, with grip and a long finish that will reward several years in the cellar. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees.

Additional information
Its weight and grip stand up to richer fish such as monkfish, turbot and grilled tuna, and to lobster in butter. It also suits roast chicken and pork, and the savoury, mineral finish works with mature hard cheeses.
