Description
Vignamato began in 1940 when Umberto Ceci bought a small plot at Battinebbia, and three generations later the family still farms Verdicchio in the hills of the Castelli di Jesi, inland from the Adriatic in the Marche. Verdicchio is one of Italy's most characterful white grapes, naturally high in acidity and known for a distinctive bitter almond note on the finish. The vineyards sit on clay and limestone soils at altitude, where cool nights preserve the citrus freshness and the fruit ripens evenly. After pressing, the wine is aged on its lees, a stage that rounds out the texture and adds a savoury depth while keeping the wine fresh and precise. The colour is bright straw with green tints. The nose leads with lemon and green apple over white flowers and a light herbal note, and the palate is dry, taut and saline, with real drive and length before the classic almond close. This is a versatile, food-friendly white with plenty of character for the price. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
