Raúl Pérez makes Viariz from Mencía in his home region of Bierzo, in Castilla y León. Aged twelve months in oak under respectful farming, it is a light, fruity red of wild red berries, cherry and a fresh, stony minerality.
Description
Raúl Pérez is one of Bierzo's most influential winemakers, and Viariz is his lighter Mencía from this sheltered region in north west Spain. Bierzo lies in a basin where Atlantic moisture meets continental warmth, and its slate and clay soils give Mencía its hallmark freshness, fragrance and mineral cut. The wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, the slow oxygen exchange rounding the tannins while leaving the bright fruit and aromatics in front, a vinification aimed at the grape's perfumed, easy drinking side rather than weight. Respectful farming keeps the vineyards and their older vines healthy. The wine is a bright, light ruby. The nose offers wild red berries, cherry and redcurrant with rose, dried herbs and a stony, earthy note. The palate is light and fresh, with soft tannins, lively acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Serve cool at 14 to 16 degrees, which suits its bright fruit and light body. It works well with poultry, game birds and earthy dishes, and can stand in for a white alongside richer fish.
