Yzaguirre has made vermouth in Tarragona since 1884, and this Rojo Reserva owes its character to twelve months of barrel ageing. Sharp and aromatic, it shows woody, coffee notes over ripe fruit, with a velvety palate of woody depth and spice and good acidity.
Description
Vermut Yzaguirre is one of Catalonia's leading vermouth producers, working from El Morell near Tarragona since 1884 and bottling more than thirty references from its facilities. This Rojo Reserva is among the most recognised vermouths in Spain, and its character comes from twelve months of ageing in barrel. Catalan vermouth is made by macerating a base of selected base wine with wormwood and a range of aromatic herbs, roots and spices, then sweetening and colouring with caramelised must. The year in oak is what sets the Reserva apart, the slow exchange of oxygen through the wood softening the wine and drawing out the woody, coffee and toasted notes while the bitter botanicals hold the line. The colour is a deep red. The nose is sharp and aromatic, with wood and coffee notes mingling with ripe fruit. The palate is velvety and pleasant, carrying a tenacious woody character, spice and raisined fruit, with good acidity keeping it fresh and a long finish. Serve over ice with a slice of orange as an aperitif, or neat at cool cellar temperature as a digestif. The woody, coffee depth also makes a partner for dark chocolate and aged cheese.
