Yzaguirre has made this classic Catalan red vermouth in Tarragona since 1884, and cinnamon is its signature. Sweet and balanced, it carries herbs and spice over the warm cinnamon note, its dark red colour drawn from added caramel.
Description
Vermouth Yzaguirre Rojo is one of the best-known Spanish vermouths, made in Morell, Tarragona, in northern Catalonia since 1884. It is built in the traditional Catalan style, with a wine base macerated with herbs and spices, where cinnamon stands out as the signature aroma. The traditional vermouth method infuses wormwood and a wide mix of botanicals into the wine, with sweetening to fix the aromatics; the dark red tone comes from added caramel, which also rounds the palate and reinforces the warm spiced character. This is the everyday classic of the Spanish aperitif table, made to be poured over ice rather than sipped slowly. The colour is a dark, characteristic red. The nose is intense, with herbs and spices over the unmistakable cinnamon. The palate is sweet but balanced, the botanical mix carried by the warm spice and closing on a fine bitter finish that keeps it fresh. Serve chilled at 8 to 10C over ice with a slice of orange, the standard Spanish vermut hour pour. It suits olives, salted almonds, anchovies, cured ham and aged cheese before a meal.
