Perucchi has made Catalan vermouth since 1876, and this Gran Reserva is its barrel-aged flagship. Smooth and easy, it carries oak, ripe fruit and nuts from the wood over a balanced bitter finish, built from handmade wine, herbs and roots.
Description
Perucchi is one of the oldest vermouth houses in Spain, its first production recorded in Barcelona in 1876. This Gran Reserva is its barrel-aged style, made in Catalonia from a base of handmade wine macerated with herbs, plants and roots in the traditional method. The vermouth is then aged in wood, where slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the texture and develops the oxidative, nutty and oaky character that defines a gran reserva. Extended cask time also concentrates and rounds the wine, so the botanical bitterness sits in balance rather than dominating. The colour is a deep amber to mahogany. The nose is intense, with oak and nuts typical of the wood, ripe and dried fruit and warm spice. The palate is smooth and easy to drink, the sweetness and the bitter herbal grip in even balance, with a pleasant lingering close. Serve chilled at 8 to 10C over ice with a slice of orange as an aperitif, or sip neat after a meal at cellar temperature. It pairs naturally with salted nuts, cured ham, hard aged cheese and dark chocolate.
