Description
Vermouth Cuppedia is produced by Bodegas Riojanas in La Rioja, a long-established Spanish wine house. The name is Latin for delicacy, and the recipe is built around mugwort, the artemisia relative of wormwood that supplies the defining bitterness of vermouth. The wine base is fortified to 15 percent and macerated with mugwort alongside mountain herbs, sweet spices and citrus peel, the maceration drawing out aromatic oils and bittering compounds while added sugar sets the sweet red style. The colour is a deep red. The nose reveals candied fruit, mountain herbs, sweet spice, a toasted nutty note and citrus. The palate is flavoursome and elegant, carrying orange marmalade, cinnamon and clove over good acidity, with a fine bitterness on the close that keeps it balanced. Serve well chilled over ice with an orange or lemon twist as an aperitif, or build it into a vermouth and soda.
