Mas Martinet makes this Catalan rosé from old vine Garnacha, Cariñena and Garnacha Gris, aged seven months in barrel and demijohn. Organic and pale, the 2023 is youthful and delicate, with strawberry, peach and a fresh, dry palate.
Description
Mas Martinet is a leading name in Catalonia's Priorat country, and Verge de Martinet is its organic rosé from Garnacha, Cariñena and Garnacha Gris. The vines grow on the region's poor, stony soils, including the licorella slate that defines Priorat, under a hot, dry climate with marked shifts between day and night that hold acidity in the ripe fruit. The grapes are direct-pressed to keep the colour pale, then the wine ferments and ages for around seven months in barrel and glass demijohn. The demijohn ageing exposes the wine to very little oxygen and no oak flavour, building texture and a fine, savoury complexity while the barrel adds a touch of breadth. The colour is pale salmon. The nose is fresh and delicate, with strawberry, white peach and a faint herbal note, and the palate is dry and light, with bright acidity, a subtle textural grip from lees and a long, clean finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. It works with grilled fish, white meats, summer salads and soft cheeses.
