Verd Albera Blanc is an Emporda white from Celler Marti Fabra, blending Garnacha Blanca, Muscat and Chardonnay. Fermented in concrete with its lees, it is aromatic and textured, with white blossom, peach and a floral Muscat lift.
Description
Verd Albera Blanc is made by Celler Marti Fabra in the D.O. Emporda, in the far northeast of Catalonia near the French border. It blends Garnacha Blanca at 70 percent with Muscat at 20 percent and Chardonnay at 10 percent, from the winery's own vineyards farmed on ecological principles. The Muscat is the aromatic signature here, adding floral and grapey lift to the broader, rounder Garnacha Blanca, with Chardonnay filling out the middle. Emporda is a warm coastal zone swept by the Tramontana wind, which dries the vines and concentrates the fruit. The grapes go through a period of skin contact maceration, which draws aromatics and a little texture from the skins, before the must is settled to remove solids. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats with the lees, which preserves freshness and builds a gentle savoury texture while keeping the fruit clean. The colour is pale gold. The nose is aromatic, showing white blossom and rose with ripe peach and melon. The palate is textured and balanced, with orchard fruit, a floral thread and a fresh finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees. Its aromatic character makes it a good foil for lighter dishes and gentle spice.
