Description
Veramonte lies in the Casablanca Valley, a cool coastal region of Chile pioneered by Augustin Huneeus as a site for quality wine. The estate farms organically. Casablanca sits close to the Pacific, and morning fog and cool ocean breezes create a long slow ripening season that Pinot Noir needs to keep its acidity, red fruit and delicacy in a warm country. The soils of granite and clay lend structure and an earthy depth. This Reserva is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens tannin and adds a light vanilla and spice frame without masking the fruit, while malolactic fermentation rounds the palate. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows cherry and red berries with a savoury, earthy note and dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with fine tannin, a peppery savoury edge and a clean finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It is a food-friendly red that suits duck, poultry, mushrooms and richer fish such as salmon.
