Venus La Universal is the Montsant project of Sara Pérez and René Barbier, made from Garnacha and Cariñena on a small organic plot in Falset. Long ageing gives it floral Garnacha fruit, red and black berries and a savoury, mineral depth.
Description
Venus La Universal is a Montsant red made by Sara Pérez and René Barbier, who trained at their respective family estates in Priorat, Clos Martinet and Clos Mogador, before starting this project in Falset in 1999. The wine blends Cariñena and Garnacha from La Universal, a small four hectare organic plot. Montsant rings the Priorat hills on a mix of clay, limestone and granitic sand, soils that drain well and stress the old vines into low yields of concentrated fruit. The warm Mediterranean climate is moderated by altitude and cool nights, which slow ripening and keep acidity fresh, holding the alcohol to a restrained 12.5 percent. Garnacha brings red fruit and a floral, fragrant lift while Cariñena adds dark fruit, acidity and grip. The wine sees long ageing of around 42 months, which softens the tannin and adds savoury, spiced complexity while the fruit stays bright. It is deep ruby, showing aromas of red and black berries, dried flowers and herbs over a stony, mineral note. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with fine, savoury tannin, fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and mushroom dishes.
