A 27 Year Old Skeldon bottled by Velier at 60.4%, the closed-estate unicorn at its most towering, ultra-dark and woody with dried plum, burnt molasses, tobacco, coffee and a near-eternal dry finish.
Description
Skeldon is the great closed-estate name of Guyana, its original stills long gone and the marque surviving only through recreation on the Uitvlugt Savalle column. Velier's old Skeldon bottlings, from Luca Gargano, are among the most prized and expensive rums in the world, and this 1978 sits at the summit of that legend.
Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon at full cask strength, it is intensely dark and deeply woody: barrel, toast, prune and vanilla on the nose, then tobacco, roasted notes and liquorice across the palate, finishing on dark chocolate, espresso and oak that seems never to end. At 60.4% it is a towering, contemplative pour for the most experienced drinkers, the headline example of why a finite closed-estate marque commands what it does.
