Velier & Scheer Clarendon Wedderburn Continental Aging MMW

This Clarendon comes from the Velier and Scheer collaboration, pairing the celebrated Genoese house Velier with the Dutch broker Scheer on a Wedderburn-marque pot still rum, code MMW. Unusually for Jamaica, it was matured continentally in cooler Europe rather than tropically at origin, which means slower, gentler ageing and a different balance from a tropical Clarendon of the same age.

Distilled on the pot still from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon casks, it is bottled unsweetened at a high 63.9%. It needs air to show its best, opening from solventy glue and marzipan into baked banana, pineapple, apple, chocolate and honey, before a dry, woody, peppery bitterness takes the finish, with a plastic edge. The continental ageing keeps it leaner and drier than its tropical siblings, making it a challenging, analytical counterpoint, a punchy, unsweetened Clarendon that rewards patience and a side-by-side comparison.
