A tropically aged Clarendon pot-still Jamaican at a forceful 69.7%, all tropical fruit, glue and varnish over leather, sawn wood and peppery spice, bottled by Velier dry and undiluted for drinkers who like to take rum apart.
Description
This is a Velier selection of Clarendon, the Jamaican distillery whose pot still feeds so many independent bottlings, here in the EMB style and matured entirely in the Caribbean heat. At 69.7% and fully tropical-aged in ex-bourbon wood, it is unsweetened and uncompromising, in the additive-free, full-proof tradition that built Velier's name. The long ferment and pot distillation give it the ester intensity Jamaica is known for, sitting in the medium-high Plummer register but pushed hard by the strength.
The aromas run to overripe tropical fruit, glue and solvent, with woody and savoury notes underneath; the palate is leather, wood and tropical fruit turning peppery, bitter and astringent into a dry finish. This is a technical, demanding rum rather than a crowd-pleaser, missing the sweet fruit cushion some look for at the end. Add a few drops of water, give it time, and it rewards drinkers who enjoy dissecting esters and oak at full power.
