A Pure Single Rum from Mount Gay, sixteen tropical years off the pot still at a full 60%, dry and oak-driven with dried fruit, bitter chocolate, vanilla and a herbal, menthol lift, selected and bottled by Velier.
Description
Velier's Last Ward celebrates Barbados through Mount Gay, the island's heritage name, here as an unsweetened pot-still Pure Single Rum from the 2007 vintage. Sixteen years of tropical ageing in ex-bourbon wood and a full 60% strength push the classic Bajan style well beyond the everyday blends, into something deeper and more oak-forward while keeping the balance Barbados is known for. As a single-distillery pot-still bottling with no additives, it sits squarely in Velier's purist tradition.
The nose leans on vanilla, dried fruit and roasted barrel notes; the palate turns woody and tannic with dark chocolate, vanilla and a bitter edge, finishing on wood, tropical fruit and bitter orange. Drinkers describe it as mature in the best sense, with coconut, ripe and dried fruit, herbs and a fresh, almost calvados-like lift that reads as atypical for Mount Gay. It rewards slow sipping and a good airing in the glass, ideal for anyone who likes dry, cask-strength Barbados rum taken further into wood and spice.
