A dry, spicy Mount Gay single cask from the 2007 vintage, roasted oak, espresso and coconut over vanilla, cherry and leather, matured in ex-bourbon and bottled unsweetened at 60% by Velier in magnum.
Description
Velier bottled this Mount Gay magnum from the 2007 vintage in its Elliott Erwitt series, drawing on the heritage Barbados distillery that dates its founding deed to 1703. At fourteen years, single cask and unsweetened at 60%, it is a punchier, more rugged Mount Gay than the standard range, trading the house softness for spice and length.
The molasses spirit, matured in ex-bourbon oak, runs dark and roasted. The nose offers vanilla, coconut, cherry and chocolate, the palate turns woody and roasted with coconut and firm oak, and the finish is long and warm on vanilla, leather, wood and espresso. The strength is largely well integrated, leaving a dry, characterful Barbados rum. This is one for drinkers who lean toward the woody, oak-forward side of the island, a more assertive Mount Gay that swaps sweetness for roasted depth and a lingering close.
