A Velier bottling of Cuban Havana Club from 1993, light and dry-leaning with dried apricot, figs and floral notes over a vegetal, yellow-fruit palate, an unusual and decidedly lean take on Cuban ron ligero at 40%.
Description
This is an early Velier release of Cuban rum from Havana Club, vintaged 1993 and bottled by the Genoa house most associated with full-proof Demerara and Caroni. Cuba is the home of the light ron ligero style, column-distilled from molasses and aged for cleanliness, and this carries that lighter signature rather than Velier's usual heavyweight character.
Matured in ex-bourbon wood, it shows a delicate, slightly austere profile. The nose offers dried apricot, dried figs and floral notes with a spirity edge, while the palate turns vegetal and parfumed with yellow fruits, closing on gentle spice. At 40% it is soft and understated, a curiosity carried more by its provenance and the Velier name than by sheer flavour intensity. One for collectors drawn to the lighter, more transparent face of Cuban rum.
