A tropically aged Hampden at full proof, all gluey high-ester funk, roasted pineapple, mango and marzipan over solvent and varnish, this Velier bottling turns the Trelawny pot still character up while keeping it integrated at 62%.
Description
Hampden in Trelawny is the reference point for Jamaican high-ester funk, a 100% pot still house running long wild fermentation, dunder and traditional muck pits on its double retort stills, with no additives. Velier aged this 2010 vintage in the Caribbean and bottled it undiluted at 62%, the unsweetened, full-proof, single-distillery template that made Luca Gargano's name.
Esters are the engine here, the aroma compounds long fermentation builds and the pot still concentrates, and they read as ripe banana, pineapple, mango and tropical fruit alongside the glue, solvent and varnish that mark the upper reaches of the style. Tropical ageing has folded oak and a sweet pastry, marzipan and olive complexity around that funk, and the finish stays dry, fruity and long. This is an intense, divisive expression for drinkers who already love the gluey tropical character and want it at reference strength.
