A dry, low-ester Hampden OWH single cask from Velier, this 8 Year Old leans on ripe papaya, tropical fruit and citrus peel over well-integrated oak, distilled on the double-retort pot still and bottled unsweetened at a full 60.4%.
Description
Bottled by Velier as part of its Endemic Birds series, this is an 8 Year Old Hampden carrying the OWH marque, the lightest and cleanest of the estate's recipes. Hampden works entirely on double-retort pot stills in Trelawny, and OWH shows the distillery without its ester hammer, distilled from molasses in 2012 and matured in ex-bourbon at origin before bottling at cask strength.
The profile is drier and more wood-driven than the high-ester marks, ripe papaya and tropical fruit with spice on the nose, the same fruit over oak on the palate, and a fruity finish with chocolate and leather. Tropically aged, unsweetened and bottled at 60.4%, it shows a creamier, more restrained Hampden where the fruit and integrated oak lead rather than glue and varnish, a rewarding pour for drinkers who want the distillery in a calmer key.
